How to Plan a Landscape to Help Prevent Flooding

1. Plant a rain garden. A rain garden is meant to hold water during rain storms and allows the water to soak into the ground within 24 hours of the rainfall. Keeping the rain garden at least 10 feet away from your home will keep water from gathering and potentially flooding your foundation. Use plants that are local to the area and that have deep roots to keep weeds away. 
2. If your property is near any natural water sources like a stream or creek, mow your lawn within three feet of the banks, allowing the grass to act as a barrier between you and the rising water. 
3. Speaking of grass, don’t cut your grass too low. Grass isn’t only planted to make your yard look better, but also to hold excess water. 
4. Plants should be native to the area and have a high water tolerance. 
5. Build up barriers using grass, shrubs, and mulch. 
6. Divert rain spouts so they point away from your home.
